Best Misting System for a Patio in Australia: How to Choose

The best misting system for an Australian patio is a high-pressure system that's sized to your space. That means a pump with enough capacity for the number of nozzles you need, a misting line that suits how permanent the setup is, and a fan added in if you live somewhere humid. Get those three things right and a patio can feel up to 10°C cooler on a hot afternoon, without anyone getting wet.

What doesn't work is buying on price alone. A cheap hose-fed mister and a proper high-pressure system might look similar on the shelf, but they behave very differently once they're running. Here's how we help customers choose, broken into the decisions that actually matter.

Start With the Size of Your Patio

Every misting pump is built to run a certain number of nozzles, and the number of nozzles you need comes from the length of the area you want to cool. So the first job is simply to measure your patio.

As a rough guide to how our range is sized:

  • Small courtyards and balconies (around 3 to 20 m²): our entry-level pumps, like the Easy Mist 25 and EcoMist-25, run up to 8 nozzles.
  • Average patios and decks (around 10 to 35 m²): the Easy Mist 50 and EcoMist-50 support up to 14 nozzles, and the Eco Mist 50i supports up to 15, split across multiple zones.
  • Large entertaining areas and pool surrounds: the MistPro range steps up from there, with the MistPro-150 supporting up to 45 nozzles, the MistPro-200 up to 60 and the MistPro-300 up to 90.

If your patio wraps around a corner, or you want to cool the pool area as well as the deck, add the lengths together. It's always better to size slightly up than to run a pump at its limit. If you're close to the edge of a pump's range, give us a call and we'll work through the layout with you.

Then Think About Your Climate

Misting works through evaporation. Each tiny droplet absorbs heat from the air as it turns to vapour, and that's what drops the temperature. In hot, dry weather, evaporation happens fast and the cooling effect is strong.

In humid weather, the air is already holding a lot of moisture, so evaporation slows down. Misting still works, but airflow becomes the key. That's why we recommend adding a misting fan for patios in humid parts of the country. The fan moves the mist through the space and helps it evaporate, so you get a cooling breeze instead of mist hanging in the air.

So if you're in a dry inland area, a fixed misting line along the edge of the patio is often all you need. If you're in a coastal or tropical area, plan for a fan as well. Our misting fans are designed to run off the same high-pressure system.

Choose Between Nylon and Stainless Steel Line

The misting line is the pipe that carries water to the nozzles. Our kits come with a choice of nylon or 304 grade stainless steel line.

Nylon line is flexible and easy to work with, and it's the more affordable option. It suits installs where the line can be tucked away, such as inside a fence rail or along the inside lip of a gutter.

Stainless steel line costs a little more but looks sharp when it's on show, such as along a pergola beam or the edge of an alfresco roof. It's the choice most people make when the line is part of the look.

Both work at full pressure. The decision is mostly about appearance and where the line will be mounted.

Decide How You Want to Control It

This sounds like a small detail, but it changes how often you'll actually use the system.

Our Easy Mist and EcoMist pumps come with a remote-control key that works within 20 metres, so you can turn the mist on without getting out of your chair. They also have pre-programmed timing options.

The MistPro range adds app control, so you can schedule misting sessions and adjust settings from your phone. If you want the patio cooled before you get home from work, or you want the system to cycle on and off through the afternoon, app control makes that easy.

Listen for Noise

Nobody wants a pump drowning out the conversation. High-pressure pumps used to have a reputation for being loud, but modern units are much quieter.

Across our range, operating noise sits between about 48 dB and 60 dB for the residential pumps. The EcoMist-25 and Eco Mist 50i run at 48 dB, which is about as quiet as these pumps get. Where the pump sits matters too. Mounting it around a corner or behind a screen, or using a wall-mounted pump cover, keeps it out of sight and out of earshot.

Set a Realistic Budget

On our online shop, DIY pump kits currently start from $660 for the Easy Mist 25. The larger residential MistPro kits range from $2,490 to $3,690, depending on the model and whether you choose nylon or stainless steel line. Larger installations, including anything over 52 metres of line, are priced as custom quotes.

When you're comparing prices, compare like with like. A low-pressure system that connects to your garden tap will always be cheaper, but it can't produce the same fine mist. If the cheaper option leaves your furniture damp and your guests moving indoors, it hasn't saved you anything.

Plan Where It Will Be Mounted

The best system in the world won't perform if it's mounted in the wrong place. A few rules of thumb:

  • Run the line along the edge of the area you want cooled, so the mist forms a curtain between you and the heat.
  • Put the line on the side the breeze usually comes from, so the wind carries the mist into the space.
  • Keep the nozzles high enough that the mist has time to evaporate before it reaches anyone.

We have plenty of clever options here, including hiding the line inside the top rail of a steel panel fence or along the inside lip of your guttering. Have a look at our installation advice for ideas.

DIY Kit or Full Installation?

Our misting kits are designed for DIY installation. They come with all the parts you need, including the pump oil, along with installation instructions, and we share an installation video to help you through it. Most standard residential setups can be installed in a few hours using the quick-connect fittings.

We're a supply-only business, so we don't install systems ourselves. If you'd rather not do it yourself, a local plumber can fit the kit for you, which is often worth it for larger patios, two-storey homes or setups that need to blend into the design of the house. Send us photos and measurements of your space and we'll recommend the right pump and nozzle layout. You can see the full range of misting kits in our shop.

Our Short Answer

If you have a typical Australian patio and you're in a dry or mild climate, a correctly sized high-pressure pump kit with a fixed misting line is the best value. If you're in a humid area, add a misting fan. If your patio is large, or the system needs to look like part of the house, talk to us about a custom design.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best misting system for a patio in Australia?

A high-pressure misting system sized to your patio. Look for a pump that operates at around 1,000 psi, with enough nozzle capacity for the length of your area and a misting line that suits where it will be mounted. In humid areas, add a misting fan.

Which misting system should I buy for my patio?

Measure the area first, then choose a pump that supports the number of nozzles you need, with some room to spare. Small courtyards suit entry-level pumps running up to 8 nozzles. Larger entertaining areas suit pumps that can run 45 nozzles or more.

What should I look for in a patio misting system?

High pressure (so the mist evaporates instead of wetting you), anti-drip nozzles, a quiet pump, easy control by remote or app, and a misting line that suits your install. Good filtration also helps keep the nozzles clear.
