Heat & Flies Ruining Your BBQ?

Every summer we like to take advantage of the warmer weather and enjoy the great outdoors, however our Australian summers get very hot, uncomfortable and the flies make it impossible to serve food without using a multitude of covers and other chemical sprays.

So how can you enjoy a BBQ without the stifling heat and flies?

Mistech Cooling is your answer!

How an outdoor misting system works in your home

A curtain of mist acts as a barrier to keep hot air from invading your patio or entertainment areas. It's cooling at a fraction of the cost of running an actual air conditioning unit. Our Misting Systems use a high-pressure pump and small diameter nylon or stainless-steel tubing to force water through specially designed nozzles that produce a micro-fine mist. The droplets of mist are so fine that they 'flash evaporate' which instantly cools the surrounding air without getting wet!

The pressure is what makes it work. A high pressure misting system runs at around 1,000 psi and breaks water into droplets as small as 8–10 microns. That's small enough to evaporate in mid-air. Garden-tap misters run at mains pressure, so their droplets are larger and more likely to settle on skin and furniture.

Piping is the other choice to make. Nylon is flexible and easy to hide along beams and gutters. A stainless steel misting system holds a straight, rigid line. It suits exposed installs where the piping is part of the look, such as a modern pergola or a pool fence.

Create a beautiful and relaxing cooling curtain of mist resulting in a virtually fly free zone.

Planning Your Patio Misting System

A patio misting system is only as good as its layout. The same pump and nozzles can feel brilliant or barely noticeable depending on where the mist line sits. It pays to plan this part before anything is fixed in place.

Nozzle placement

  • Mount the line high enough for the mist to evaporate before it reaches anyone. Around 2 to 3 metres suits most patios.
  • Run the line along the outer edge of the space, not directly above the dining table or lounge.
  • Angle nozzles slightly outward and away from seating so the mist drifts into the air around you.
  • Put the line on the side the breeze usually comes from, so it carries cool air into the patio.
  • Keep nozzles clear of walls, glass doors and ceilings. Mist that hits a solid surface turns back into droplets.

Mounting on pergolas

Pergolas are the easiest place to fit a mist line. The piping clips along the inside edge of a beam, where it's out of sight from most angles. Mounting the pipe work on all four sides can create a beautiful cooled zone.

Mounting along eaves

Running the line along the eaves or fascia creates that curtain of mist between the house and the yard. It's the best setup for keeping hot air out when the doors are open to an air-conditioned living room. Keep nozzles away from gutters and door openings so nothing drips where people walk.

Adding an outdoor mister to your umbrella

For courtyards, balconies and poolside loungers, a mist line on a market or cantilever umbrella is a simple option. The line clips to the umbrella ribs, with a flexible feed line running down the pole. Leave enough slack for the umbrella to tilt and fold without straining the fittings.

Do Misters for Patio Areas Work in Humid Weather?

Yes, but they work better in some places than others. Evaporation is what cools the air, and dry air soaks up water much faster than humid air.

On a dry, hot northerly day in Melbourne or Adelaide, mist evaporates almost instantly and the temperature drop is at its biggest. That's where you'll see results closest to the 10-degree figure.

On a sticky summer afternoon in North QLD, the air is already carrying a lot of moisture. The mist still cools, but the drop is more modest. A few things help in humid climates:

  • Choose high pressure systems over low pressure misters. The finer the droplet, the faster it evaporates.
  • Add airflow. Pairing mist with one of our best misting fans adds a wind chill effect on top of evaporative cooling.
  • Run the system on a timed cycle rather than constant spray, so the air has time to absorb the mist.
  • Combine misting with shade. A covered patio holds cool air far better than an open deck in full sun.

DIY Misting Kit vs Professional Custom Design

Our systems use push-in fittings, so a misting kit is well within reach for a handy homeowner. Here's how the two options compare.

DIY misting kit Professional Custom Design
Best for Handy homeowners with a straightforward patio or pergola Larger, multi-zone or complex layouts
Design We help size the kit to your space before you order Layout planned, designed and prepared by Mistech Cooling
Fittings Push-in, no specialist tools needed Additional fittings are provided and selected based on your design
Availability Shipped Australia-wide Shipped Australia-wide
Time Usually a weekend for a typical patio Can take days to design the custom design for your outdoor area

Either way, the pump needs a nearby outdoor power point and a water connection. Any new power point must be installed by a licensed electrician.

Outdoor Misting System Installation and Maintenance

A well-installed outdoor misting system needs very little attention, but a few regular checks keep it running at its best:

  • Check the water filter each season and replace the cartridge when it looks discoloured.
  • Clean the nozzles if the spray pattern looks uneven. In hard water areas, they may need a soak in a mild descaling solution.
  • Check the piping and fittings for leaks at the start of each summer.
  • Drain the lines before winter in areas that get frost.

What Our Customers Say

Patio Misting System FAQs

How much does an outdoor misting system cost?

It depends on the size of the area, the number of nozzles, the pump and whether you choose nylon or stainless steel piping. A smaller outdoor mister setup costs far less than a multi zone outdoor setup. Our Quote Estimate tool gives you an estimated price for your space in a few minutes.

How much water do misters for patio areas use?

Very little. Each high-pressure nozzle uses only a few litres an hour. Because the mist evaporates, there's no run-off or puddling.

Will a patio misting system wet the furniture?

A correctly placed high-pressure system shouldn't, because the droplets evaporate before they land. Furniture usually only gets damp when nozzles are mounted too low or point straight at seating. That's why placement matters so much.

Does misting keep flies away?

It helps a lot. Flies and other flying insects tend to avoid the curtain of mist, which is why customers find BBQs and outdoor meals far more pleasant. It won't replace fly screens, but it cuts down the number of covers and sprays you need.
